Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Welcome to my first grade classroom. My school is located in Washington state at a title one school. My 23 students are hard working, thoughtful and respectful learners but are unfortunately in a school that is severely underfunded.

My students and their families come from many cultural backgrounds with more than half of them, English being their second language.

With the increasing demands of grade level standards, I am unable to give my students the experiences they deserve to have in the classroom. Please help these students exceed state expectations and become well-rounded human beings.

My Project

My students need more opportunities to celebrate their cultures in my classroom and one great way to do this is with books. Such books like "Chocolate Me" by Taye Diggs and "Gazpacho for Nacho" by Tracey C. Kyle allow my students to read about characters that look like them, thus helping to increase their engagement and love for reading. Because students spend so much time in school, it is a critically important opportunity and responsibility that schools ensure that all students get the support and help they need to feel that their diverse backgrounds are represented.

I want my classroom to be a place that embraces cultural diversity and is able to be a place that brings out the best in all of my students.

I am asking for books that have strong people of color, amazing and accomplished women, stories that have characters that match a wide range of diverse cultural and racial backgrounds from my classroom, and books to better understand people with disabilities. With your support, these books will be motivating for students to set and reach many of their goals.

Please help me get these books for my students in order to help them become the wonderful people they can be. Thank you!
