Diversifying Our Classroom Library

My Project
4th grade is my favorite grade to teach, and this crew of 4th graders is no exception. I have the privilege of working with a classroom of 70% Somali students and 30% Latino students. All students are learning English as a second or other language. At this age, 4th graders have such a passion for learning and reading, and I can only hope to continue to foster that desire for growth. Due to two years of learning during COVID-19, all of my students are markedly behind grade level. That said, many of my students have created personal reading goals involving reading their first chapter book ever!
To keep it short and sweet, our classroom library is severely outdated and underpopulated. My kids have had a hard time finding interest in our classroom library's books, which are mostly dated from 30+ years ago. We have limited access to a school library, which has equally limited selections. Your contribution will help to keep these kids' love for books and reading alive. As a new teacher, I am just starting to build a classroom library, and I am seeking to expand it with high-interest books that feature main characters that look like my students.
