Diversifying Our Classroom Library With Asian American Authors

Help me give my students books by Asian American authors in order to diversify our classroom bookshelves.

My Project

Our school has no library, which makes classroom libraries very essential at our school. My students love my classroom library. They borrow books, share books with friends, review them on Goodreads, etc. Because of this, I'm always searching for a variety of books that will interest my students.

Students are really interested in action packed or romance novels, especially those with diverse characters.

My students are always checking into my room to see if I have received or purchased any new books.

With Lunar New Year approaching, I was gathering my books together that were written by Asian American authors and realized that my library was lacking. I want to add more novels written in the perspective of Asian American authors. I want my students to be exposed to as my different voices and stories as possible.

I carefully chose novels that are engaging and that would have students coming back for more. The purpose of the books is to get students hooked on reading and to increase their Lexile levels.

They are also an escape for many students. It helps them with their mental health as a form of relaxation or reflection, especially if the characters and/or their situations are relatable to them. The more students read, the more they also want to write, which increases their skills, but more importantly, helps them deal with emotions that they might have locked inside.
