I teach 1st grade at a high needs public school in North Carolina. Most of the students in my class come from low-income households. I have 15 young and curious students who love to learn. I love that they come to school everyday ready to grow their minds and try their best on anything we do.
My students may come from a variety of different backgrounds, but in our classroom we are like a family and one community of learners.
Each day, they impress me with their kindness towards one another and their character, even at such a young age. Not only do I get the privilege to teach them each day, but I learn so much from my students as well.
My Project
First grade is where students really grow as readers. I am so impressed with my students growing their love for reading this year. Many of my students love to take their time and find books just right for them when picking books out of our classroom library. I am so glad they want to find books to fit their interests. However, I teach a very diverse group of first graders, and often times they struggle to find books with characters like them.
These diverse books will allow my students to see themselves in the books that they read.
This is so important to making sure my students find books they are interested in. During our reading time each day, my students have the opportunity to independently read to themselves or a stuffed animal. These books will be great for them to practice their reading with during that independent reading time.
These diverse texts will also serve as great read-alouds for our class. They will allow all of my students to learn about people, families, and cultures that may be different from their own.
