For almost 10 years, our district has built wonderful classroom libraries at the elementary and middle-school level. As a result, many students that enter the doors of our high school are avid and passionate readers. At the high school level, we have a wonderfully curated media center (which boasts the highest book circulation rate in the county).
This love of reading comes through in our classroom discussions as students dig into the books within our curriculum.
Additionally, many students are three sport athletes, artists, writers, and actors. They balance school, jobs, extracurricular activities, family responsibilities, and volunteer work. They are curious and hardworking, thoughtful and empathetic. They seek to know more about the world beyond the walls of the classroom.
My Project
Students must have access to a variety of diverse young adult literature, both to see themselves in books and to learn about other lives and experiences. For these reasons, it is important to have diverse reading options available for students in the classroom.
Our district values choice and independence.
We want students to choose books that will engage them for their independent reading experiences. By making diverse options available, students' worlds will grow.
With the creation of classroom libraries, teachers will be able to recommend books and get them into students' hands immediately. Students will also be able to see the value of books as teachers promote them in the classroom.
