The freshman class of our school is a pretty large and diverse group of students. Our student body comes from every socioeconomic setting. Some students have access to the technology they need while many come to school without.
To be effective learners, students must have access to technology.
In ninth grade, students are exposed to different genres of literature and learn to analyze the text critically. With Internet access, we can reach far and wide to find various types of text not found in an old dusty textbook.
My Project
I have so many types of learners in my class. Their reading levels are across the board from second grade to college level. It is hard meeting the needs and harder to meet their interest. Learning barriers like Dyslexia and ADHD are prevalent in my classroom. I want to help those kids see they can overcome these obstacles.
Students want to read novels with subjects and struggles they associate with like Autism, ADHD, ADD and Dyslexia.
These additional titles will offer stories my students can relate to.
Giving kids choice in independent reading gives them power. Mockingbird, Joey Pigaza titles, Marcelo in the Real World, A Fish in a Tree, Monster are all titles requested by my challenged students. I am convinced if they have a story they can relate to they will become more empowered. Empowered students are successful students.
