The students that I work with are highly resilient. Their ability to persevere in the face of many significant challenges is admirable.
Despite being heavily impacted by poverty, institutionalized racism, and community trauma, my students still dream of better lives for themselves and their families.
The spirit and humor they display in the face of these obstacles are a daily inspiration to me.
Many of my students are also first-generation immigrants, refugees, and ESL students, who have had to overcome numerous barriers to success. Their determination is laudable.
My Project
Every year, my 11th grade students complete a literature circle project, during which they read, analyze, and give a presentation a novel that they have read with a small group of their peers.
It has been somewhat difficult in the past to find engaging, contemporary works for students to choose from, that speak to their very diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Often the most popular titles at the school library are in short supply and most students lack the resources to obtain copies on their own.
This DonorsChoose.org project will help me to provide a more authentic and meaningful learning experience for my students within the context of this project.
