My students are 5th grade high ability students, meaning they are labeled as advanced in their reading and writing ability. Although they are all reading and writing at a higher level, my classroom is very diverse. They come from many different cultures, have different languages spoken in their homes, and are different races.
The students in my classroom love to read, and they love to read EVERYTHING!
They love reading about different cultures. They look forward to our reading block daily, where they get a good balance between book club choice books, class novels, and independent reading novels.
My Project
In the fall, our class participated in the Global Read Aloud, where we read the novel, Amal Unbound. This novel takes place in Pakistan, and the main character is Muslim. My students absolutely loved this book, and have gravitated towards other novels like this since.
I am wanting to give my students the opportunity to read about characters who are both similar to them and different from them.
Kids generally like to read about characters they can relate to, and I'm wanting to add more diversity to my library to help with this. This way, all of my students, regardless of their race, religion, or culture can find themselves in the characters.
One great way that students learn about other cultures is through books. I am hoping through this project, I will be able to help students broaden their horizons to learn more about other cultures around the world, and help them find a way to learn about the cultures of their classmates.
