This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work at a Title I School in Philadelphia. At our school we strive to meet our scholars where they are in every aspect of the whole child and give them the best environment for them to grow and succeed. I have the privilege of teaching (2) exciting classes of 23 scholars that have mixed interests, abilities, and goals.
Since we are starting the school year virtually, I want to make sure students are getting rich literature that is not only relatable but where they see themselves.
Can't wait to dive into the diverse reads and make connections with my scholars.
My Project
In today's society, students struggle seeing themselves in popular children's books in most libraries and/or classrooms. Help me as an educator give my students the opportunity to read about characters they can relate to. All of the books requested are diverse and have characters of many different races and cultures. These books will be used virtually as read alouds for learning many reading skills and in the classroom used for students to choose books during independent reading.
With everything going on currently in the world, it is vital that as a teacher we talk about diversity and what it means in the classroom.I hope to make all my students feel welcome and represented in the classroom.
