Diverse Reads for Black History Month

Help me give my students diverse biography books to inspire and educate them in time for Black History Month!

My Students

Do you remember that first book that seemed to open a whole new world for you? The one that made you stay up until long past your bedtime, flashlight on under the covers as you read page after page? That's the stage my students are at right now! They're such avid, enthusiastic readers, and always curious to learn more about their favorite topics, whether it be fishing, Minecraft, dogs, sharks, or science.

My students are right at that magical age where they're discovering themselves as readers and starting to explore new genres and topics, and it's such a joy to watch them grow as they learn more about the world and themselves.

My Project

Black History Month is nearly here, and as the primary school librarian, I'm busy searching for great read-aloud books to introduce our students to real-life Black heroes and heroines from our country's past. Unfortunately, our media center's biography section is extremely dated (most books there are 20-50 years old, much older than the average age of books in the rest of the library) and doesn't have much in the way of diverse offerings.

I would love to strengthen our collection with a variety of updated and diverse biographies so all of our students can see themselves reflected in what they read, and get a more diverse window on our country's history.

With these new books, I'll not only have plenty of wonderful options for Black History Month read aloud, but will be able to give our students a stronger variety of books to check out and learn from all year.
