I teach ALL students! As the GT coordinator and teacher of a special education support class, I have the opportunity to reach all levels of students.
Because my school is near a military base, we also serve many military students who spend the majority of their life moving from school to school.
They are the unsung heroes of our country. We often don't think of military kid life, but as their teacher, let me tell you about how resilient they are! One of my military students wrote his personal narrative on saying goodbye to his mom at the airport. She was deployed twice, and missed two of his birthdays. They serve us, so I can't think of a better way to give back than to serve them.
Along with military students, I also teach students with special needs and students with gifted abilities. Both are equally creative and fill me with wonder about what they can create and accomplish. Never underestimate a determined child!
Each student is unique, and deserves an opportunity to learn through up to date resources.
My Project
All kids are different so teachers face the challenge of building a largely diverse classroom library. This extensive library is designed to meet the needs of a variety of learners.
On of the reasons literature is so valuable is that we use it for social emotional learning.
Through characters facing challenges, students learn persistence. When we read about a historical figure who worked hard to achieve their dreams, we learn the value in working hard for our own. Literature teaches us far more than words on a page.
Below you will find a list of examples about what types of books I chose and the impact on student learning.
- For my striving readers, I've included graphic novels to help support their comprehension.
- To encourage a classroom culture of diversity, I chose books that represent a variety of cultures.
- In order to support reader's workshop, I chose mentor text that model the social emotional learning that we want our students to do.
- Nonfiction to picture books to support all readers in their understanding of expository text.
- Greek mythology graphic novel and other novels for my higher level readers.
This project is designed to include books that attempt to reach all students. Because my heart is dedicated to help all students discover an excitement for reading, I selected texts that appeal to variety of students.
