The students in my classroom are amazing because of their capacity to simultaneously demonstrate resilience and enthusiasm.
First grade is an essential time during which knowledge and imagination intersect - the trials and tribulations of life have yet to cause turmoil and dissent from the magic of books, and children experience the world with wonder.
The children in our class, many whom are culturally and linguistically diverse, deserve to know the feeling of being transported from their lives to the stories told through the magic of words. They also deserve to learn with the best resources available in the world of education in the 21st century. These students learn best when they can learn by talking and discovering with each other, as they are not just learning content, they are also learning a second language.
My Project
My students and I would like to request a larger variety of books for classroom read alouds and shared reading activities. As you know books are essential in students' success at school. This year, I have been trying to build up our classroom library with diverse picture books in which all students see themselves. I am finding that even though the students are just beginning to read, they are very motivated to read. Their motivation comes when the books are exciting and engaging.
We would like books that have our favorite characters and brand new heroes and heroines to hook every student with a book that they enjoy listening to.
My hope is that by introducing students to a larger variety of stories, that they will each find a style of book they enjoy and see themselves on the pages of a book. It brings a smile to my face to hear my students exclaim, "Look! She looks just like me!" This will help motivate them to become readers and hopefully build a love for literature and learning! Thank you for your consideration of our project!
