Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I, middle school in Texas. All of my students are considered economically disadvantaged. They face a range of other challenges every single day. The majority of the students I work with have a variety of learning disabilities such as ADHD, emotional disturbance or have experienced trauma in their lives. My students are kind, hard-working and amazing. They make me proud everyday.
I set high expectations for my students and I am constantly amazed by their efforts despite the many challenges they face.
My students continue to help me grow into a better educator and inspire me everyday.
My Project
One of the things I strive to do is instill a love for reading in my students. I want them to read a variety of books about diverse people. Over the past few years, I have seen students show the most interest and growth in reading novels where they can see themselves and their friends.
Novels where my students can see themselves are always the most popular.
To model reading and writing strategies for my students, I need picture books These picture books will hold their interests and often teach them things they did not know about themselves. Books like She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World, 28 Days: Moments in Black History that Changed the World, and The Undefeated will all help my students grow as readers.
Many of my students are reading significantly below grade level. Finding books they enjoy can be a challenge. This support helps students to read more and improve their reading level over time. I believe these novels will help them to develop a love for reading.
