My students need these books for a true reflection of my students in the classroom library. This project will get picture books that have diverse main characters for students to better relate to my students.
I work at a Title I school in Anderson, South Carolina. We are 100% dedicated to developing critical thinkers but we are 80% poverty-stricken, with 80% of our students living below the poverty line. Students in my classroom need an extra push to be engaged in reading. This is the basis for everything else in their life and they don't really see the importance in reading.
My classroom is full of students who can reach their maximum potential with support and the right books.
I firmly believe that the future of South Carolina and maybe the nation sits in my classroom. Now we have to make it happen.
My Project
I have a diverse student population and I am hoping to get more books that show the diversity of our classroom in picture books for students to see themselves in their reading. This helps them connect and love books and reading even more!
Picture books speak to readers of all ages, races, and genders so I want to give the students access to picture books with characters that they can relate to.
Students should see themselves in their reading! Plus, these picture books will appeal to all levels of readers from highly advanced readers to those still growing in their reading.
These picture books are going to keep my students engaged in reading and making meaningful connections with other cultures and their own. These books will guarantee that students don't just pick up book after book without learning about the diversity of the world but rather acceptance, kindness, and inspire curiosity, and connect readers to books.
