My Students

My students are resilient, inquisitive, and hungry for knowledge. Despite their many challenging life circumstances they go home to each and every day, they come to school with a smile on their face, hope in their hearts, and a determined mind. As a sixth grade English Language Arts teacher of a low income community, it is important to me that my students have the necessary materials so that they can be successful. Many of my students are reading below grade level but they're trying very hard each day to make progress. This community have been severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy and some students are still rebuilding their lives. More than three quarters of the student population receive free breakfast and lunch daily. In spite of the challenges they encounter, my students constantly rise to the occasion with their determination and they're ready to learn.

Please help me give my students a diverse classroom library that consists of engaging books to meet the needs of all my readers.

Reading is essential so that my students can improve as both readers and writers. This influx of engaging and diverse books will tremendously support their curious minds.

My Project

This project will help to engage my students with access to a diverse selection of novels. Expanding our classroom library selection will bring more books within reach for my sixth grade students. I have chosen books that will be of high interest so that they can learn, but they will also build confidence and self-esteem. These books will help my students realize that they are capable of learning and in turn give them a newfound motivation to work hard and keep learning.

Please help change the lives of the children in this classroom by giving them this opportunity to foster literacy skills, build their self esteem, and promote a lifelong love of reading.

Furthermore, my students greatly value books as they understand its importance toward our learning. Therefore, the book cards and self-adhesive pockets will be extremely helpful in continuing to utilize our library card system to track these much appreciated novels.

As an educator, I am always eager to learn about the newest trends of teaching the craft of reading and writing. Therefore, the reference book will be a great tool to help with assessment, identifying goals for readers, and figuring out which strategies to teach in guided reading instruction.
