"Teach in the way a child learns, don't force a child to learn in the way we teach" -Ignacio Estrada
I teach Occupational/Life Skills curriculum at a large, urban high school.
My students have a range of disabilities including learning and intellectual disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, autism, as well as health and other physical impairments. Many of them are also English Language Learners, and almost all of them come from low-income households. My students show greater enthusiasm and achievement when learning is interactive, interesting, and includes technology and high-interest reading materials.
My Project
Students at my school, particularly the Diverse Learners and English Language Learners, have limited access to technology within their classrooms. My students in particular need a classroom set of tablets to make their lessons and the curriculum more meaningful to their daily lives. I teach life/occupational skills. I envision that instead of just showing them a paper job application, my students can use these tablets to access online applications during the lesson. Students will also use these tablets during class time to research topics on banking, shopping, paying bills, budgeting, healthcare, transportation and other relevant 21st century life skills.
These tablets will change my students' lives because they will gain technological skills that will enable them to live as independently as possible.
They will be able to access online job applications that will help many of them get jobs on the weekends and/or over the summer. Many of my students need to get a job now that they are of legal age so that they can help supplement their household income and help their struggling families.
