Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I think of how special my students are, I think of all of their "Ah-ha!" moments. My class size may be smaller than most traditional classrooms, but it's actually quite large for a Special Day Class, and my group of students are special in many ways.
Despite being in a Special Day Class, they've proven to me, their peers and others in the community that their disability is not a factor.
They have shown great strength in their work ethic, their drive to learn, their passion to win and their commitment to succeed in all areas.
My students are from low-income households; some are homeless, some aren't sure when their next meal will come, some are facing other hardships that would classify them as "at-risk". I have a refrigerator in my class, that has allowed me to keep foods for students who have dietary needs, but also enough space to have foods for students dealing with hunger.
But no matter the issues they are facing, my students are overcoming these adversities, and they show up and are thriving each day.
My Project
The EiE To the Rescue: Engineering Aid Drop Package will be a valuable addition to our S.T.E.A.M. learning time. Students be able to will explore how to create an aid drop package and connect their learning to the real world. This is something that is so valuable for my students, as they come to me with a variety of Learning Disabilities.
This is just the type of engaging, concrete design project that my students find meaningful, and it will also be a perfect springtime design challenge!
My students need more opportunities to develop the 21st century skills that will be essential for their success in life. Through this kit, students can engage in innovative creative thinking and collaborative problem solving, by applying S.T.E.A.M. concepts and modern technology and engineering-based skills in class, and outside of school during enrichment opportunities.
Through this Kit, my students will explore being an engineer as they design and engineer technology to solve various problems such as designing an aid drop package that can protect its contents.
By integrating S.T.E.A.M. into my classroom students will learn and apply the engineering design process, as they work in teams to imagine new ideas, build models, investigate concepts, make discoveries, and develop their own understandings. This project can connect to all areas of the curriculum, but most importantly, students will develop invaluable 21st century skills, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity skills.
