Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 6/7/8th grade band and orchestra south of Seattle where 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. A majority of our students are bilingual and thrive while bringing different cultures into our music classroom. I strive to provide music education that everyone can access, understand, and enjoy.
We are a school that has only been established for one year and still need many materials to build our music program, especially now during Distance Learning.
My goal is to create a fun-filled, functioning, and equitable classroom for my students.
I am passionate and determined about providing these kids what they deserve in order to achieve success in the music classroom.
My Project
This project is near and dear to my heart. I am working hard on reworking our music library to include music from under represented composers. Often times, music education only focuses on Western music and notation, but many of my students do not relate to western music and tonalities and culture.
Help me provide my students with mirrors and representation in the music they perform this year and beyond!
Allowing students to explore music by composers that look like them and sound like music they hear at home is imperative for buy in and inclusion!
