My Students
My students are sweet and diverse. Unlike the other middle school in our district, our kids come mostly from poverty. As teachers here, we know that we must provide all the supplies we require for our lessons. Many of my kids will eat their only meal of the day here (free lunch/teacher-funded pantries).
I am a first year teacher and I want to change the stigma around our school. I want my kids to see their value because it's incredible!
My Project
Teaching English in middle school automatically puts you in a constant battle of making reading enjoyable. It's a huge task, made even bigger by the fact that many of my students don't "see themselves" in the books that are typically stocked in school libraries.
I would love to have a classroom library with diverse books where my kids can read about students who look like them.
Mental health is also a huge focus of mine and many of these books focus on specific experiences my students are struggling with. Reading can be such a powerful tool and I know these books will be a source of comfort and exploration for my students.
