Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will be a first year teacher next year and have not officially met my amazing students yet for the 2018-2019 school year. However, I have been able to visit the school and meet some of the students that will be in my classroom next year.
Students were curious and engaged in their material, asking high-level questions and showing me the books they were reading.
I saw a classroom full of learners reading culturally relevant and diverse texts which is something I feel extremely passionate about continuing in my own classroom this coming year.
My Project
My students need access to culturally relevant books that reflect the lives of my students. This will help to engage students even further in their independent reading and create a classroom of strong readers. I have found in my own experience while student teaching, that when students have access to high-quality books they are much more likely to make reading a habit in their daily lives.
With these new books, my students would have access to books that reflect their daily lived experiences.
These are award-winning books, from diverse authors that will help to create a classroom library teeming with engaging books for all students.
