Diverse Children's Literature in the Music Room

Help me give my students more representation within their books. Many of these books are about black musicians that we will read in class. The other books are folk songs turned into books.

My Students

I am the music teacher in a k-8 elementary school in an urban school district. My school services low income families and most students live below or at the poverty line.

Our school is a safe place that provides food, education, respect, even clothes, and a rich learning environment for students to be able to come and learn.

The students come to school and do their best despite the family problems they may face outside of our school.

In the music room we work hard, we solve problems, we listen to each other and we all belong. We work together to learn through music and create music together.

My Project

These children's books will be used during music lessons for instruction and to create lessons around the musicians in the books. Some of the musical artists featured in these books are Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. It is important to have representation in the books I use in music class and these books will help us create a more diverse classroom library.

The additional books in this collection are from the "First Steps in Music" curriculum.

These books are created with folk songs to teach musical concepts using folk music and story telling.
