I have a dynamic group of kids who are eager to learn. A wide range of abilities and cultural backgrounds adds to our sense of community.
Students' varied interests enhance our conversations and discussions in the classroom.
Students play musical instruments, dance, play basketball and soccer, swim and run competitively. Some excel at math, others are avid readers, and some write with strong voice and compassion.
We strive for an honest and respectful class community that recognizes and appreciates differences, accepts challenges, and promotes kindness and perseverance.
My Project
We have a classroom full of diverse students with diverse interests. Living in a suburban community, they may have somewhat protected experiences. They need access to diverse books written by authors with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Multiple copies of the books will allow the students to dive deeply into the characters' lives, to analyze critically, and to have great discussions about their thoughts and reactions.
As these fifth graders grow up in a global world, they need to read and wonder about the struggles and successes of others.
They need to read and re-read complex texts to understand choices and consequences. That way they can become stronger citizens and foster their acceptance of others.
