My Students

Each of my students is working toward becoming a better communicator with the world around him or herself, be it through finding an alternative means of communicating when spoken language is not an option or learning the subtle social nuances that help one relate to others.

I am a speech-language pathologist serving a caseload of 60 students in grades K-6 and 9-12.

My students, many of whom are on the autism spectrum or have cognitive learning disabilities, are energetic and desire to be able to communicate better with peers. They work hard each day to improve their abilities to interact and connect with others.

My Project

My students would benefit from an Apple iPad2, which will enable me to challenge and support their communication needs. The iPad is portable, versatile, interactive, and able to generate instant student engagement. Through the cornucopia of apps available, it provides exceptional potential for teaching and learning. Furthermore, using the iPad within the therapeutic setting will be a gateway for supporting generalization of skills at home. Several of my students have personal iPad devices that they will be able to use with their families to continue to practice communication skills in other settings. iPads are adaptable to the diverse needs of all of my students. There are apps that improve communication through augmenting verbal output, that help with word finding for students who have suffered from traumatic brain injury/stroke, and that provide contextualized practice for activities of daily living such as grocery shopping or explaining ailments to a doctor.

An iPad offers a form of technology that can support the diverse and significant communication needs my 60 students in the therapy room, the general education classroom, and at home.
