My students come from a variety of backgrounds but we emphasize honoring our diversity and learning from each other.
We are all in this together.
As second graders, they are actively forming their world view based on what they are exposed to daily. I strive to increase exposure to multiple cultures and to emphasize diversity and equality. Part of belonging to a community is valuing your worth and the worth of others, which requires an open mind and intentional exposure.
It is important that books open readers to new worlds, but it is just a important that books act as mirrors and provide an opportunity to connect, empathize, and respond. The demographics of my school are shifting and with that emphasizing equality, equity, and open minded approach is integral in teaching the next generation.
Sometimes all it takes is reading a book for a student to feel they belong, they have a place, even if they feel that they are different.
They can begin to understand that in the grand scheme of things, our differences make us stronger. Perhaps now more than ever.
