My students are a diverse community of learners who have been working to improve their reading and writing. We have been using literature as mirrors, windows, and doors into the world.
We are a fishing community that is now having to move into a new economy as the fishing industry is suffering and changing.
At the same time, our proximity to a major city has brought in a growing professional population. We serve an increasingly diverse community, ethnically, racially, linguistically, and economically.
We have been working on building a positive community in order to break down barriers between the diverse groups that make up our student body.
My Project
We have diversity in our world and in our classrooms and now is a time to match that diversity in our literature. We need engaging, relevant books that reflect what our students experience and hear about every day. In order for that to happen our books need to be updated. We need to have books that reflect every part of our society and open up students to the possibilities that exist in the world.
The books I have selected will bring to our literature the same diversity as among my students and this will increase their engagement.
These books also show how young people have overcome adversity and challenges to reach their utmost potential. Hopefully, these titles will show my students that they too can work and overcome the challenges they may have in their own lives.
