Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach fourth grade at a culturally diverse school in the heart of Portland, OR. We are an International Baccalaureate (IB) school with many diverse learning opportunities for our students. My students come to school with many different experiences and stories that make them all unique learners. They all enter my class ready and willing to learn. They are very creative and always excited and intrigued by learning new things.

The students in my class enjoy being pushed academically to interact with rigorous work.

My class is filled with students who show their true potential every day they walk into school, despite the everyday challenges they face due to the climate of today's world.

My Project

My goal is for my students to be able to see themselves reflected in the books I provide in our classroom library. For black and brown students they spend the majority of their education not able to see themselves reflected in the books they are expected to read.

As an educator of color, teaching predominantly students of color, it is my job to provide resources and lessons that are culturally responsive.

I want to give my students an opportunity I didn't have in school. I believe my students will produce better work and have a better connection to their learning when they can personally relate to the learning materials.

I am confident that by you donating this library to my class of young, emerging learners that you will help my students with an opportunity to see themselves reflected through literature in a positive, fun, and uplifting light.
