My students will be learning completely online for at least the first half of this year. I am a special education teacher for 7th grade ELA. Throughout my week, I work with over 100 students in multiple classes. I want to use independent reading and book clubs to help them connect with others in their class and escape from their homes for a little while. I’ve selected some diverse books which I love and that are student approved! Please help me cultivate a class culture of reading! In the past, I've always purchased books myself. This year, a lot of money has gone into readying myself for online teaching. I would appreciate any help you can give to add to the classroom library!
My Project
This year, my learning support students will be reading many independent books in their home. They are going to use their independent books to practice classroom skills and inspire their personal writing journey. Students will be reading these stories, and I will be using them as mentor texts for lessons. I need diverse books in my library to appeal to all readers. I included some graphic novels my students love. "New Kid" by Jerry Craft became one of my favorite books this summer, and I am hoping to encourage all of my students to read it throughout the year. The book addresses stereotypes and identity very well. My students love "Ghost" by Jason Reynolds, but I don't have the rest of the books in the series. I know they would appreciate these. I also included books by Alan Gratz because they have been very hard to find in discounted book stores (where I do most of my shopping for our classroom library), but the students ask for these regularly. His books pair well with their history lessons. Your donations would be greatly appreciated by my students and myself. Thank you for your consideration!
