Our students come to school eager to learn each day. They are excited to learn new things and share their knowledge with others. School is the place where our students have access to new knowledge through books and technology.
Our school community believes that books have the power to change us.
We are passionate about getting books into the hands of our students. As a new 6th grade teacher, our classroom library is lacking in high interest books appropriate for intermediate readers.
My Project
Students are expected to read 40 books during the school year of their choosing from a variety of genres. The first twenty minutes of instruction in our classroom is dedicated to reading. Our students must have access to books in order to participate. Students can bring books from home and the library, but I would love to offer books in our classroom as well. There are currently less than 100 books in our classroom library because I am new to teaching the grade level. I want my students to see that reading is a priority in our class and to have access to materials that support that. Books will be able to be taken home, shared with friends, and used for authentic reading conversations. We will also write about our reading in notebooks that the students and I exchange.
Children need to be able to see themselves in literature.
The books requested in this project feature diverse authors and characters that my students will be able to identify with. Several books feature characters with physical and mental disabilities. Others feature characters who are struggling with identity and acceptance. The books are all written in a graphic novel format that is friendly for reluctant readers. Diversity is celebrated throughout these books and will help my students develop empathy.
