This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the privilege of working with a highly diverse group of thoughtful and creative students. Our school is in the heart of Pittsburgh where one-third of our population are emergent multilingual learners who represent 18 countries and speak 14 different languages.
I am inspired every day by my students’ willingness to take risks in order to grow personally and as global citizens.
I am their teacher, but my students have taught me many lessons through their patience, persistence, and innovation.
My Project
These books will continue to enhance the culturally responsive classroom that I strive to create. My students are building a love of reading- each day I read to them, they read to themselves and they read to each other. The students I serve come from places all over the world and each of them brings their unique lived experience to our classroom.
It is vital that they see themselves and their families represented positively in the stories we read.
Each of these books was carefully chosen with my specific students in mind. There are many different cultures present in my classroom and one way to acknowledge and celebrate them is through literature.
Please consider supporting our classroom and helping my students build a sense of self alongside their love of reading.
