I am so incredibly fortunate to work with a group of amazing students! Every year I am amazed by their perseverance, willingness to be challenged and kindness. I truly believe I have the dream group of students every year! My students are fantastic bilingual learners who work hard every day to grow in their native language and second language-English, so they can be literate in both languages. By being literate in both languages, they will have so many more opportunities as adults and I would never want them to think of it as a disadvantage. I always try to remind them that although learning a new language is difficult, it will be very beneficial to them in the future.
I teach at a Title l School with a high-poverty population and over 900 students.
Many of our students have struggles outside of the classroom that affect their ability to focus within the classroom. This presents a challenge, but we always want to make sure they are taken care of in all areas of their life. So, we must help meet their basic needs so they are able to learn.
My Project
My students are in need of diverse books that are authentic Spanish or a quality translation. It is so difficult to find good Spanish books that are not "lost in translation" AND have diverse characters. Did you know that 73% of the children's books written in 2015 featured main characters that were white? Another 12.5% featured animals or objects. (Cooperative Children's Book Center). That doesn't leave much room for my students to see their faces and experiences reflected in books.
I want our classroom books to be mirrors into their lives and windows into the experiences of others.
Reading is so powerful, but even more so when you see yourself within the pages of the book. These books will engage my students in reading and help them to learn about themselves through the characters.
