Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want all of my students to fall in love with reading. This is a difficult task without a variety of leveled books. My goal is to provide even my most struggling readers with texts they can enjoy and feel successful with.

My students lack many things.

They lack money, stay-at-home parents, and sometimes even homes. My students are in the 7th grade-- the most dramatic and confusing time of one's life. Their lives are messy, emotional, and often depressing. I have a group of very diverse learners. Some students read at a college level while others read 4-5 years below grade level. The majority of my students are English Language Learners-- some have been in the country for less than a year.

My Project

These books will help students of all reading levels, particularly the outliers. It is difficult for a 7th grader who reads at a 2nd grade level to get excited about reading. That is why High Interest-Low Readability books are important. The students who read at much higher levels grow bored of the 7th grade books but aren't interested in classic literature yet. They need high lexile books that match their interest level. Language Learners need books with accessible concepts and pictures to support understanding. All of my students, who are ethnically diverse, deserve to read books with characters they can relate to. In short, these books will help my students fall in love with reading and grow as readers. I want kids to feel proud of what they're reading and what they are accomplishing-- diverse books will make that possible.

The books provided from these donations will help foster a love of reading in my middle school students.

Students will be interested in the texts in my classroom. They will get hooked and feel proud when they finish. They will want another book. Life is better with books-- help make my students' lives better.
