My students are eager beginning readers who are excited to come to our daily small group reading lessons. It will be a challenge to help them meet grade-level expectations by the end of the year, but a challenge we will face together.
I aim to provide high-quality reading instruction to my wonderful bunch of beginning readers.
My school is within an urban community, where we value our community partnerships. My students come from high-need backgrounds and have most of their literacy experiences at school. My school embraces the balanced literacy teaching model and supports the response to intervention initiative.
My classroom library is a cozy place where my students enjoy gathering to hear a read-aloud or to sit in a cozy corner to read independently. Although we already have a variety of books, my students would benefit from having more culturally relevant book choices. My students come from a variety of family backgrounds.
Student engagement increases when children see themselves reflected in the literature they read.
With engagement comes an increased time on task, which will positively impact achievement. I work hard to foster a love for reading in my students. A rich classroom library that appeals to student interests is the foundation that they need. Keeping journals full of our thoughts, ideas, and questions is another way to build reading stamina and comprehension. Having colorful writing supplies to accompany the books will help build that reading and writing connection. We will use all of these materials to talk about our reading and build a community of readers.
