Help me give my students access to diverse books that will help them grow as readers and speakers! These bilingual books represent their languages and cultures.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What makes my students special? To this I say, "What doesn't?" In my world, all students are special. Each child comes from a different background but all for the same purpose: to grow socially and emotionally as individuals and to learn.
This year, I will be working with a diverse set of energetic, excited, and motivated first-grade students.
These students come from a range of socio-economic backgrounds, many from lower-income families. They are a mix of ethnic backgrounds, including many English Language Learners. My students also have to varying social-emotional and physical needs. Some students have ADD or ADHD, some have fine or gross motor challenges, and more.
Each, and every student, no matter who they are, deserves to be taught at his/her learning point and to love learning. Teaching students to love learning is what I love to do!
My Project
Many classrooms are filled with diverse sets of kiddos. My classroom is no different. This year I have the privilege of teaching my first graders not only to read but teaching many of them how to speak and write in English, which is their second language. Many of my English Language Learners speak a different language when they go home.
It is my desire to add a section in my classroom library with bilingual books so that children can have access to them at school, and, in turn, have the ability to take them home to share.
Students and their families will not only be able to read these books in their native language and in English, but they will also see their culture represented in books. These books will increase access to the cultural wealth of different individuals in my classroom.
