Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a reading intervention teacher, so my students are struggling readers and some are learning English for the first time. Many are reading one or two levels below grade level and need extensive support. Despite their academic challenges, they work hard to build new language skills everyday and are proud to showcase their learning when given the opportunity.
The majority of my students come from low-income households and face significant challenges, but that does not stop them from coming to school each day excited and eager to learn!
They are eager and curious scholars who are each other's greatest supporters. My students are always willing to help each other and are quick to celebrate each other's successes. Our little learning community is one in a million!
My Project
I want to create a classroom library that empowers all readers through identity affirming, diverse books. Research shows that a strong classroom library has a significant impact on student learning. More importantly, students need to see their identities reflected in the books they read.
A blindspot in our curriculum is access to books with characters that reflect my students' identities and communities.
With your help, we could build up our classroom library with books that feature diverse characters and culturally relevant stories. This project would purchase over forty, new picture books. I know my students will connect with these characters making the reading experience more meaningful. Any opportunity to enhance their reading experience is a new opportunity for them to fall in love with reading.
