My students come from a low-income community and are faced with many challenges before they even step into my classroom. Many of them are below grade level in math and reading. We have a very wide range of learners in each classroom. Some students come in two or three grade levels below and some students are two or three grade levels higher than the rest of the class.
Our school is a Title I school located in a small, rural community with very few resources.
These books will expose my students to cultures that they are not exposed to in their rural community. I want to teach my students about different people and cultures through picture books. We will use these books to start important conversations about how we are all different and how that is important and amazing at the same time. I also want all of my students to find books in our classroom that have a main character that looks like them. These books would do that for my students. This is only the start to an essential part of teaching students about the world and the people that live in it.
