My students need diverse books such as I Am Enough, Let the Children March, and Hidden Figures to make my classroom library well-rounded for all children!
I am a teacher in a low-income school district affected by Hurricane Harvey. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom, and the hurricane has only elevated the difficulties they face. Onehundred percent of my students receive free breakfast and lunch at my Title I school in Port Arthur, Texas.
Even though many of my students are displaced, they are coming to school with excitement and an eagerness for learning.
I want to provide my students with positive and exciting learning experiences that help them learn and grow while they are with me. Though I cannot control their experiences at home, I can control what happens in my classroom and with your help I can make sure they participate in interesting and compelling learning experiences!
My Project
My students are diverse and come from all walks of life. Sadly, my classroom library does not include very many diverse books for my students to read! I have come to realize how important it is to have diverse books accessible to my kiddos.
Including diverse books in my classroom library would not only empower my students but also create positive perceptions of oneself and others.
Books such as I Am Enough, Little Leaders, and Hidden Figures show diverse students that they are capable. They are able to read about people like themselves and realize their potential! As a teacher, I make sure all of my students know their worth and potential but reading about examples of others to look up to will help SO MUCH! Thank you!
