In our district, more than three-quarters of students are from low-income households with many qualifying for free or reduced lunch. We need support in purchasing diverse books to enable us to better understand ourselves and the world.
My young students need a variety of diverse books to allow them to use the books as mirrors, windows, and doors creating and instilling love and acceptance for all people.
These books will allow students to begin to understand lives and feelings that are unlike their own.
My Project
Having diverse books to read and share will help to enable my students to better understand people and their lives or feelings. By reading books about things that students have not experienced, or do not understand it creates a window or door into a different time in history, different feelings, or lives that are different than their own.
A quote from the book "I Am Enough" by Grace Byers- "I know that we don't look the same; our skin, our eyes, our hair, our frame- But that does not dictate our worth- We both have places here on Earth- We are all here for a purpose- We are more than enough- We just need to believe it."
These books focus on a variety of topics including; building character by talking about filling peoples' buckets, including everyone, standing up against bullies, understanding bullies, understanding anxiety, believing in yourself, imagination, and refugees. Other topics include how women changed history, desegregation, residential schools, Civil Right's Movement, and others.
