Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a diverse population. They are creative, thoughtful and full of questions. They come to school each day ready to learn new things and excited to grow.
My students are brand new pencils ready to be sharpened with knowledge.
They have so much potential to fill this world with their abilities. They want more than anything, to be successful. Unfortunately, my students struggle with reality. Many don't have a consistent parent. Many have to worry about where they will sleep at night, who will be home when they get home and if they will have food for dinner.
I work at a school where eighty-eight percent of our students qualify for the free or reduced price lunch program. Over three-fourths of my twenty-five students come from homes where English is not the primary language. They need every possible advantage I can give them to help them be successful in this world.
My Project
Many of my students are reading below grade level. Having books with diverse characters will help students connect to the characters and to help inspire and motivate my students to read more. My goal is to provide books that they would want to pick up and enjoy, thereby expanding their reading level.
I want them to see themselves and their friends in the books they read so that they are able to make more connections.
These books will create amazing mentor texts for us to teach with. These books will be a wonderful addition to our second grade diverse classroom!
