This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My pre-k class provides the first school experience for three, four, and five-year-old children. Many of the children live in impoverished neighborhoods. They attend pre-k for the entire day and are provided with breakfast and lunch. They have a nap time, too. I am responsible for providing a fun learning environment which is culturally diverse and unique for each child.
I strive to provide a loving, nurturing classroom to foster their self-esteem and develop their social, language, cognitive and motor skills.
I want the children to be successful in school to ensure a positive continuation of their education in the future.
My Project
My students love to look at books and listen to stories. Every day at preschool, my students get to choose a book during independent reading time. They also pick books to look at when they are waiting to move to a new activity. During book time, they practice book-handling skills, retell stories by looking at the pictures and develop a love of reading by having a chance to interact with books regularly.
Providing my students with culturally diverse books will allow them to identify with the characters and surroundings in the books.
Many times, children of color do not see themselves in literature.
Providing diverse literature can help to foster positive self-concepts and identities. My students become excited when they see characters that look like themselves in books. These books can stimulate their imagination and understanding of the world.
