Do you remember reading books in a round robin fashion? Were you forced to read a book that was to difficult for you or one that you had no interest in? I would like my students to have the opportunity to read interesting books, of their choice, on their independent reading level.
My school is a small local neighborhood school.
There are 20 students in my class. They range from 6-8 years in age. The children in my class are hardworking, excited learners. They all have different learning styles and abilities. Like all six year olds, they love to read. My challenge is to keep them excited about reading and to meet their various reading abilities and interests with fun engaging books. We never seem to have enough.
My Project
What a thrill my students get when they go "book shopping" in my classroom library on Monday mornings! The classroom is all abuzz with opinions and ideas as each student searches for the perfect book. They are allowed to choose 10 books to put in their book boxes for the week. They read these books during Readers Workshop and independent reading time. Since they can easily read 10 books in a week the books on my bookshelves quickly become stale and boring. New books would keep "book shopping" an exciting magical time in my classroom.
Think about how much you enjoy visiting you local book store.
The smell of new books. The desire to find the perfect read. The children in my classroom feel the same way when they going "book shopping" on Monday mornings. New books would continue to feed their endless desire to learn to read. New books would encourage good book talks and help students develop a sense of who they are as a readers. New books would help students become lifelong readers.
