My Students

My 23 Kindergartens come from diverse backgrounds. Many of them are from low-income homes. The majority of them have not attended preschool. 12 of my students come from homes where English is NOT the primary language. They came in with a wide-range of skills, some of them already beginning to read, while others were not even writing their own names yet.

My students love hands-on activities and anything that allows them to use their imagination.

They relish opportunities to build and create. They enjoy watching videos of scientific phenomena and learning about animals. Within the structure and academic rigor of our day, they deserve some time to just be 6yr olds.

My Project

Our school is working to create a culture of literacy by surrounding our students with books and making independent reading a priority. I have worked hard to provide my students with a variety of reading materials, but now I want to give them an inviting place to read.

I want to create a comfortable and exciting reading corner, where my students will be eager to "dive into reading." The mat, floor pillows, chair, and pop-up tent will provide a variety of cozy places for my students to reading during center time, indoor recess, or independent reading.

The underwater theme will make the area colorful and engaging, and make it a place my students want to be.
