Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students in our 3rd/4th bilingual combo class attend a public elementary school in northern California with a total enrollment of slightly over 500 students. Our school is considered to be a "School-wide Title I" school, with about 90% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches. Many come from immigrant families, and most students have few, if any, family members with formal education beyond high school. My students see and often experience violence in their community, yet they are eager and excited to be in school and have opportunities to learn.
It often seems that my students are judged based solely on their standardized test scores, instead of being recognized for how resilient, creative, and amazing they are.
While school can be challenging for many of my students due to the external pressures that they experience, my students know that they, their families, teachers, and school staff all work together as a success team.
My Project
When you contribute to this project, you’ll be helping me give my students diverse read-alouds in Spanish and English.
These diverse books will not only serve as read-alouds, but also be mentor texts to help my students become stronger bilingual readers and writers.
Because diverse books can help students make personal connections, I will target certain comprehension skills and strategies, depending on the text. As a result, my students will increase their reading comprehension in Spanish, English, fiction, and non-fiction texts. Writing goes hand in hand with reading, so my students can learn from these authors ways to improve their own writing in both languages.
