Hello! I am a high school English teacher at a high-needs school in the Arkansas Delta. I started at this school through Teach for America, but I am now in my fourth year of teaching here. The students at my school have made significant gains in literacy in the last three years. Much of this success can be attributed to an increase in reading in the student body. According to our library circulation statistics, during the 2006-2007 school year, fewer than 100 books were checked out from our school library; last year, more than 5,000 books were checked out. This increase corresponds directly to the donations of high-interest books from many members of our community. However, as scores have increased, we are now seeing a substantial gap grow between "proficient" students and those who are not proficient. The biggest problem: proficient students read; non-proficient students do not. The reason non-proficient students don't read: they don't know how to enjoy reading. So this semester we are planning to implement an ambitious program to help our low performing students develop a love for reading early in their high school career. The English Department identified all current 9th grade students who scored below Arkansas standards in the 8th grade. We want to split these students into small classrooms with English teachers who can lead discussions and develop interest in reading with various high interest books. The classrooms will be run like book clubs where students are free to share their opinions and develop creative projects from their readings. This is where you come in. We need 25 copies each of the first four books in the Bluford High series to help kick start this program. We have several books in this series in our library, and they are among the most popular books in the school. I also believe that by choosing the first books in this series, interested students will find additional books in the series and subject area to read independently. With your donation, you can make it possible to create a lifelong reader out of students who struggle with reading.
