Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at an inner city elementary school. Unfortunately, most of the young people in our school come from disadvantaged homes and many of them are English Language Learners. Even though these kids are at a disadvantage, they are bright and want to be challenged. I teach three 8th grade science classes. One of these classrooms is my homeroom and they receive Language Arts instruction in my classroom. I am also the K-5 science coach and facilitator. Part of my job as coach is to work with the teachers to complete curriculum mapping so that there is consistency in what they teach in science and minimize overlap and repetition of science lessons.

The kids love to read. As a group, in Language Arts, they just finished reading “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. I have bought some books and have had a few donated by friends and family, but they have been devoured by my kids. I have never seen a group of kids like this. When there is a lull or a break, they pull out a book and read. I don’t say anything because I am in awe and think it is great. My classroom library needs more good books, so I have chosen the top books I could find from the 8th grade reading lists of books.

One other little school policy nuance, my school library doesn’t allow students to check-out books. What is this you say? It is true. So my classroom library is in need of more good books. This project will allow my students to select from a new set of good books that they can get excited and spread the word about.

I can’t say enough about what a difference your help will be in motivating my students to read new and relevant current works of literature. I believe you will want to contribute to this excitement. Although I am not one for loitering, I think you will agree that seeing my kids loiter around the book-stand in my classroom would be a most desirable occurrence. By helping with this project you will truly be helping these young people “dive into a world of imagination and let their brains read free.”
