Mrs. Younker from Harpers Ferry WV is requesting Reading Nooks, Desks & Storage through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Ditching the Desks in First Grade!

My students need flexible seating options such as yoga balls to stay comfortable and focused while learning and cubbies to replace their desks and chairs.

My Students

My first grade students are some of the most incredible little humans I've ever met! They are funny, talented, enthusiastic, caring, and very energetic! It is rare that any of them walk through my door without a smile on their face, which is part of what makes them so amazing.

I teach at a small, Title I funded school in a very rural area.

Our community faces many obstacles such as poverty and the ever-rising heroin epidemic. All students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students also benefit from other programs at our school such as Kidz Pacs and are supplied with hats, gloves, winter coats, and even holiday meals.

A large percentage of my students have faced and currently live with traumatic home lives or experiences: death of parents and/or siblings, parents in prison, homelessness, and hunger. Which is what brings me back to my previous statement. Despite all of the darkness they encounter, they bring so much light to my classroom. This is why I have made it my mission to make sure they have everything they need to be safe, happy, and successful!

My Project

Flexible seating has been proven to increase student focus and productivity. By replacing old-fashioned desks and metal chairs with community tables and yoga balls, my students will be able to be comfortable while collaborating with their peers. In addition, using cubbies to store their supplies will increase student organization and decrease distractions during lessons. Soft seats and lap desks will give students who tire of sitting the option to lie down while working or simply provide them with a new work area and environment! These additions will be beneficial for all of my students, but especially the high number of ADHD students in my classroom.

Six and seven-year-olds are not physically or mentally programmed to sit in rigid seats for several hours a day.

But really, who is? Students have so little control over anything in their lives, let's let them have control over how and where they sit and learn!
