I am a seventh and eighth grade teacher at a rural middle school in Belmont, California. With the flu season upon us I would like to insure that we keep our absenteeism due to colds and flu to a minimun. To help do this, my seventh and eighth grade health education students will be involved in a program to learn and teach the importance of proper hand-washing. My students will develop a comprehensive K-8th grade hand-washing curriculum. They will then present each grade level teacher with a specific lesson plan to use during our Hand-washing Awareness Week. Students will storyboard, film, and professionally edit a ten-minute infomercial that creatively describes the importance of hand-washing. The infomercial will include an extensive how-to guide for hand-washing. Additionally, students will create a thirty-minute assembly to showcase their video and further emphasize the importance of hand-washing. Finally, students will create several related posters to be professionally printed and displayed throughout each of our six schools. Through this experience, students will understand and learn the importance of hand-washing and how the simple act of hand-washing can reduce absenteeism and disease. We will need funds to have students visit Philo Television to professionally edit and produce the film. This program will reach as many as 1,500 students in our district.
