Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work as a third grade teacher at a dual language charter school. I teach 107 students math and science solely in Spanish. My students experience a rigorous academic environment as they learn all subjects in both languages. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They are motivated, determined, and have a passion for hands on learning. My goal is to support them in any way that I can and provide them with the best learning experience possible. I want to provide them with memorable experience within the classroom that can foster their learning.
My Project
Students learn best when they are having fun! The distributive property is a tricky concept for third graders to grasp, but Distributive Doctor makes this concept fun and engaging. Students become immersed in a tricky topic while playing the part of doctors.
One of the trickiest concepts to explain to my 3rd graders is the Distributive Property of Multiplication.
They seem to go into a state of panic, shock, or both and just freeze up. That’s why I came want to use Distributive Doctors. I will begin the unit by reviewing arrays using manipulatives. Then we will make arrays on our Distributive Doctor sheet using blue cubes. Students will pretend they are surgeons “cutting” apart their arrays into two smaller arrays.
Students will be wearing gloves, medical gowns, hairnets, and masks to ensure they get the full doctor experience. This is an experience I hope my students will enjoy and remember. I also hope that it will help they to understand the distributive property in a fun and engaging way.
