I am a first year teacher with a very cute and curious class. We are a brand new, sub-separate classroom with students who are three years old and have an Autism diagnosis. For many of my students this is the first time that they have encountered school, teachers and other children. In order to be successful, the environment needs to have clear boundaries and dedicated work spaces with limited or no extra stimulation. They love playing, but when it is time to do work, they need something to help minimize distractions.
My goal is to create an environment that is easily changed from play to work.
Through your donation, we will be able to add three movable dividers to separated the classroom and decrease the distractions while doing work! Thank you.
My Project
Imagine coming into your very first classroom as a three year old. It's so big and so open, every thing looks like its a place to play! There's so much to see and do, its hard to know where to go. Then your teacher tells you its time to do work. You can see your friends playing, and other friends doing work with teachers. Do you think you could do your best working with all these distractions?
Now imagine you're in this same environment with an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis--this can be very overstimulating.
Children with an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis benefit from routine, limited visual stimulation, and clear boundaries. This is a very small classroom, so the space is used in many different ways, and needs to be adaptable for its many uses. What was the snack table, an hour later might be a work station. These dividers will add color as well as function. These can be used to separate students during rest time, during work time, and during behavioral episodes.
By donating to this project, you will be giving these students an environment that can be adapted daily to minimize distractions, and help better their quality of life!
