Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are so amazing this year. They are a mix of ability groups in a junior high setting but not on junior high academic levels. They love learning when it's within their grasp. Over 50% of the students are living in poverty as the mines and mining industry the community was built on suffers economic decline. Some of the students are Native American, from the Apache tribe, and most from mixed racial families.
These students have learning disabilities, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia, and require alternative teaching techniques like manipulatives to make concepts concrete and technology to let them access written language.
I love that their goals include writing, web design, serving in the Military and Armed Forces, as well as becoming a YouTube streamer. I want to help them reach their long term goals while opening the core curriculum to them.
My Project
With library closures, school closures, craziness on the news, and uncertainty, getting this tools and supplies into their homes will help bring stability and normalcy to the kids in this mining town. Mad times call for Mad Libs, a fun way to study language, parts of speech, and Spring. Though many kids have technology in their homes, it's not consistent nor is it reliable.
Kids need consistency and connections, which doing group projects, reading fun books as a class, and knowing they have the tools and support to succeed brings.
Please help me get these books and things to them.
