Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom is a place of community, shared expression, collaboration, mindful practice, and new learning experiences. A lot happens in this classroom beyond reading, writing, and math. My students come from all parts of the community as my particular program is not available in all of our district schools. My program is considered a transitional developmental delay classroom to address the students' social-emotional needs. With this, my students come from all parts of our city and bring with them the experience of their families, homes, and neighborhoods. My students often present with temporary homelessness, childhood trauma, and foster care.

One hundred percent of our students receive a free or reduced-price lunch.

Sometimes, these things enhance our student learning and make it a richer experience for everyone. Other times this brings chaos and conflict. Whatever the students come with, we work together to be a classroom community of learners moving forward to achieve academic and social success.

My Project

My students range from K-3. Literacy skills are incredibly important in our everyday lives. We are constantly reading but Covid-19 closed our school and asked students to stay home. Meaning they do not have access to the school library or community library as it is also closed. This makes it difficult to have a variety of books to choose from. Because of this, it is important for my students to have have access a variety of books. With limited resources at home and no access it is not possible. So by sending books home, literacy skills can continue. The best way to promote reading, is to give students books to read at home with their families. Some students have internet access well others to not. So sending a book home for them to keep and read over and over is the best way. With your help, our class will be able to have a wide variety of books. This will promote reading at home, as well as a new excitement for books. Books would give the family endless opportunities for learning new vocabulary both for the parents and students.

The goal is to promote literacy excitement in the home and give students consistency during school closure.

Besides books students will also get headphones, and a stylus to use with the district iPad. These are items the students were not able to get from the classroom. Students will also be sent home with activity packets that will add routine to their day and provide reassurance and consistency, making trying times into productive and happy family times.
